Dr. Daniel Banks

DNAWorks
Teacher's Institute, Wednesday Keynote, Masterclass Teacher
Join Daniel banks for a Keynote Forum exploring Hip Hop, Applied Theatre and Theatre of Purpose. During the presentation and dialogue, he will share practical information about how to structure and apply such techniques into an existing theatre program/curriculum. Banks is a firm believer in interaction: "Expect a chance to think on your feet and begin some visioning work."

Banks is an accomplished international artist both on the page and for the stage. As the founder and director of the Hip Hop Theater Initiative, celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2014, he has worked in 10 countries around the world and across the U.S. promoting creative self-expression and leadership. Banks asserts that Hip Hop theatre "is the voice of now-today's radical and avant-garde theatre, as well as the ritual theatre of a world-wide culture of youth solidarity and activism" and that these roots can be applied successfully in any environment.

Passion for learning and teaching drives Banks to continue to find ways to bridge cultural gaps and promote community evolution. His role as co-director of Theatre Without Borders ha expanded his worldwide travels. He has used the opportunity to experience and learn from a diverse array of cultures to co-found and direct DNAWORKS. Having served on the faculties of the Department of Undergraduate Drama, Tisch School of the Arts, New York University, and the M.F.A. in Contemporary Performance at Naropa University, he is currently on the faculty of the M.A. in Applied Theatre at City University of New York.
